KNX and ETS: project import, group addresses and DPTs with Can’nX

Can’nX applications rely on the installation’s ETS project to offer KNX group addresses and their DPTs. Link’nX uploads the XML export of the group addresses; Boss’nX imports the .knxproj project file to create its supervision components. These addresses are then used in scenario actions, triggers and conditions, in supervision datapoints, for logging and in associations with devices from other brands.

Link’nX manages KNX scenarios and associations. The uploaded ETS file feeds the address suggestions and the action generator.

Boss’nX supervises the building. The project import follows the Import, Dictionary, Structure and Building steps of KNX commissioning.

Chart’nX and Emergy’nX also use KNX addresses: assign Chart’nX addresses to the monitoring gateways, configure the KNX measurements and commands of an Emergy’nX device.

  1. In ETS, export the group addresses in XML format for Link’nX, or prepare the .knxproj file for Boss’nX.
  2. Upload the file to the right Link’nX project and gateway, or to the right Boss’nX supervision.
  3. Prepare the selection: ETS address filter in Link’nX, address recognition dictionary in Boss’nX.
  4. Create the items: generated actions in Link’nX, components from the structure in Boss’nX.
  5. Review each address and each DPT before any test on the installation.

For a new version of the project in Boss’nX, follow the import rerun and conflict resolution guide.

  • A group address has three levels: 0 to 31, 0 to 7 and 0 to 255, for example 1/2/3. The DPT, for example 1.001, defines how to interpret the data; an accepted format does not guarantee that it suits the device.
  • Link’nX accepts an XML export of group addresses of up to 1 MB; its help illustrates ETS 5. Boss’nX imports a .knxproj file, including a password-protected one.
  • Uploading the file creates no action or component. After a new file, review the items already configured.
  • A KNX trigger reacts to a write of the configured value, not to a read; its additional addresses share the same DPT.
  • Boss’nX shows Different ETS DPT (…) when a datapoint’s DPT differs from the one known for its address.
  • Scanning a KNX line probes 256 addresses in about 40 seconds and generates bus traffic: avoid it during ETS commissioning.
