Boss’nX schema editor on a computer: Linked data field of an Icon button

Button that does not command the right device, datapoint missing from the list, binding not saved or removed by mistake: here are the answers to common questions about the Linked data field of an Icon button, in the Boss’nX schema editor on a computer. The Icon button binding guide describes the full procedure.

Section titled “How do I link an Icon button to the right lamp?”

Choose the lamp’s command datapoint in Linked data. On the Schemas page, opened from the header bar or the Menu, open Actions → Edit schema. Wait for loading, select the right layer and the Icon button, then Configuration → Interaction → Linked data. Search for the component and choose its datapoint intended for commands, checking its name, the component and the W action marker. Save, reopen the schema to review this choice, then test the command to check that the lamp responds.

Why does the Configuration panel not reopen when I click the framed button?

Section titled “Why does the Configuration panel not reopen when I click the framed button?”

First click an empty area of the drawing, then select the Icon button again. If Configuration is still missing after this retry, contact support with the schema, the layer, the element and this attempt. Keep the element: deleting it is not a way to reopen a panel.

Why does the search find the zone but not the datapoint I want?

Section titled “Why does the search find the zone but not the datapoint I want?”

A zone or component search may leave its datapoints collapsed. Expand the desired component with its chevron. For example, if you find the Hall zone but not On/Off: when Match datapoints only is checked, uncheck it to search for Hall, or search directly for the datapoint’s name or address. Check the parent component before choosing On/Off.

Why does the list offer fewer points than the component?

Section titled “Why does the list offer fewer points than the component?”

The selector offers only the data compatible with the element type. For an Icon button, the marker is Compatible: DPT 1.xxx (boolean). The counter therefore does not necessarily represent all the component’s datapoints. If the expected data item is still missing after clearing the search, contact support to confirm the appropriate choice.

Can a compatible datapoint always command my device?

Section titled “Can a compatible datapoint always command my device?”

No: a compatible point may only serve to read a state. For a command, use a data item intended for writing and identified for the desired device; check in particular the W action marker. If its use is uncertain, contact support before changing the binding.

How do I choose between two datapoints with the same name?

Section titled “How do I choose between two datapoints with the same name?”

Tell them apart by their component and addresses. Read the component and its location, then the R and W addresses when they are filled in. You can also search for a known address in Linked data, for example the fictitious address 1/0/81. After the choice, check the component displayed in the closed field: a name such as On/Off alone does not distinguish all points.

No, the choice only changes the draft. Use Save, confirm and read the summary. Then reopen the same schema and the same layer, select the button and check Configuration → Interaction → Linked data. To change only the data item, keep the existing Behavior setting. If saving fails, follow the save troubleshooting.

How do I return to the previous data item?

Section titled “How do I return to the previous data item?”

Right after the change, use Undo (Ctrl+Z) in the bottom bar, if available; Redo (Ctrl+Y) reapplies the new choice. Check the field, then save the desired state. After leaving the editor, do not rely on this local history any more: select the known data item again if necessary.

Does the Remove binding cross delete the button?

Section titled “Does the Remove binding cross delete the button?”

No. The small cross in the Linked data field, tooltip Remove binding, immediately removes its choice, without confirmation; the button stays in the drawing. The No binding row in the selection gives the same result. To remove only the data item, leave the red Delete element button aside. Restore a necessary binding before relying on the button to send commands.

Why does a warning come back after No binding?

Section titled “Why does a warning come back after No binding?”

The Icon button no longer has a selected data item. If it must command a device, choose the appropriate data item again, then save. If it must be purely visual, see the Decorative element setting. The decorative option does not replace a binding needed for a command.

Why does Esc not close the list immediately?

Section titled “Why does Esc not close the list immediately?”

The first press clears the search. In Linked data, when the search contains text, a first press of Esc clears it; the second one closes the selection and returns to the field. You can also click outside to close without a new choice.

What if Linked data and Used do not show the same component?

Section titled “What if Linked data and Used do not show the same component?”

Review Configuration → Interaction → Linked data of the relevant button, checking the schema and the layer. If the indications still differ, contact support with the two values observed and the steps already taken. Keep the element: the Used panel or the Placed badge alone justifies neither deleting nor recreating it.

Why does the command not work after saving and reopening?

Section titled “Why does the command not work after saving and reopening?”

Reviewing the field checks the displayed choice; communication with the device is a separate link. Contact support stating the exact symptom and the fact that you have already saved and then reopened. Avoid repeated random binding changes.

What if I am on a phone or do not see Edit schema?

Section titled “What if I am on a phone or do not see Edit schema?”

Go back to the editor on a computer, the device this procedure is described for. Also check the role capabilities for View schemas and Edit schemas; viewing permissions alone do not necessarily give access to editing. If the menu is still missing, contact support with the product, your context and the missing menu.

If the problem persists after these checks, write to support@can-nx.com with: Boss’nX, the schema, the layer, the button or element concerned, the expected component, the symptom or exact message and the checks already done. A screenshot without sensitive data can help. Never send a password or a secret.
