BACnet supervision with Boss’nX: objects, datapoints and alarms
Boss’nX supervises the BACnet devices of a building. You declare the device with its IP address, port and instance, discover its objects, then create in the supervision components the datapoints that read or command these objects. A datapoint can also carry a threshold alarm or rely on the device’s intrinsic alarm.
By application
Section titled “By application”BACnet is configured in Boss’nX, in two places that require separate permissions.
BACnet devices (a Menu page, Manage BACnet permission): declaration of each device and of the gateway that reaches it, discovery and review of its objects.
- Declare and manage a BACnet device
- Discover BACnet objects
- View the objects and understand the Alarm column
Supervision components (Components, Manage components permission): creation of read or command datapoints, one at a time or in bulk, and of their alarms.
- Configure a BACnet datapoint
- Import several BACnet objects
- Configure a threshold or value alarm
- Check an alarm, its heartbeat and its BACnet source
Where to start
Section titled “Where to start”- Gather with the installer the IP address, port and instance of each device, and the gateway that must reach it.
- Declare the device in BACnet devices.
- Run the discovery of its objects. If the Partial badge appears, check the settings, then run it again.
- Add the datapoints to the component: one object at a time, with autocomplete or by entering the type and instance, or several objects at once.
- Save the component, reopen it to review the datapoints, then check the values on its card.
If saving is blocked or an object cannot be found, follow the BACnet datapoint troubleshooting guide.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- Declaring a device and discovering its objects creates no datapoint: datapoints are then added in each component.
- The form suggests port 47808 and instance 0: check the actual values. The device instance is distinct from the instance of each object.
- Bulk import prepares inputs (AI, BI, MSI) for reading, outputs (AO, BO, MSO) for command and values (AV, BV, MSV) for reading and command, up to 250 objects per import.
- For reading, the datapoint works in COV (push) or Poll mode. For command, Write priority ranges from 1 to 16; the suggested value is 16.
- The Intrinsic alarming active dot means that the object’s alarm reporting was configured at discovery time, not that an alarm is in progress. In the datapoint, Alarm source chooses between Application threshold and BACnet-native (intrinsic).
- Tag alarms start from KNX datapoints that have a read address: BACnet datapoints are not offered there.
For supervision as a whole, see Boss’nX and Supervision and visualization.
