Chart’nX energy or water generator: Modbus catalog configuration form
A Modbus configuration tells Chart’nX which register to read on a meter, through which gateway and with which parameters. It is saved in the project’s Modbus catalog, then selected in a meter of an energy or water dashboard.
Intended for administrators and installers, in the Chart’nX generator.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Prepare the Modbus parameters provided by the meter manufacturer.
- Identify the Modbus gateway of the correct project. If it needs to be declared, follow Create or edit a Modbus gateway.
- Choose an explicit name, for example “Workshop meter” (fictitious name). Never copy an example address or register value onto an installation.
Open the configuration form
Section titled “Open the configuration form”- From the catalog: click + New configuration; on a small screen, the label may be + Configuration.
- From a meter set to Modbus: Declare new configuration opens the same form and shows the target meter when it is identified.
Fill in the gateway and addressing
Section titled “Fill in the gateway and addressing”- In Modbus gateway, select the gateway, checking its name, its IP address and its port.
- In Configuration, fill in Configuration name, Unit ID and Register address. These fields and the gateway are required.
- Use the addressing convention provided for the device, without shifting a register at random.
Set the advanced settings
Section titled “Set the advanced settings”Open Advanced settings and compare each parameter with the manufacturer’s documentation.
| Field | Choice or initial value in the form |
|---|---|
| Function Code (FC) | Choice of 1, 2, 3 or 4; initially 3 |
| Word length | Initially 2 words |
| Data type | INT16, UINT16, INT32, UINT32 or FLOAT32; initially FLOAT32 |
| Scale factor | Initially 1 |
| Swap bytes, Swap words | Initially disabled |
These initial values are generic: keep them only if your meter’s documentation confirms them. = defaults only indicates that the advanced settings are at their initial values. Check the Modbus reading coefficient and the factor configured in the dashboard meter together, to avoid a repeated conversion.
Test and create the configuration
Section titled “Test and create the configuration”- If the test is available, use Test read and check that the value matches the expected measurement.
- For a single creation, leave Then create another unchecked and click Create & use.
| Starting point | Effect of Create & use |
|---|---|
| Meter card | The configuration is selected in this card |
| Import modbus | A submeter is created |
| Catalog | Back to the active list: then select it in the meter you want |
To declare a series, check Then create another and click Create. Configuration created confirms each creation; the form stays open, keeps the gateway and the advanced settings, then clears the name, the unit ID and the register. Check the parameters for each new device. These creations stay in the catalog; they are not all added automatically to the dashboard.
Edit an existing configuration
Section titled “Edit an existing configuration”- In Active, click the Edit configuration pencil.
- Adjust the fields, then click Save. Other dashboards that use this entry may be affected.
If you change what the configuration reads (gateway, unit ID, register or advanced settings), Save first opens the “What … reads is about to change” window. It compares the values before and after, and may list the dashboards concerned under Used by:. Choose according to what the new register measures:
- It measures something else, or in another unit: click Replace the configuration. The current one is archived: it is no longer read, but its measurements stay recorded. The new one starts its own history.
- It measures the same quantity, in the same unit: check the confirmation box, then click Edit in place. The history continues in the same series; so do not reassign this entry to an unrelated measurement.
Cancel takes you back to the form without saving anything.
Duplicate a configuration
Section titled “Duplicate a configuration”- In Active, click the two squares Duplicate. The suggested name ends with — COPY.
- Check the copied name, unit, register and parameters, then create the entry.
The copy is a separate configuration: it does not take over the history of the original.
Check the result
Section titled “Check the result”- In the meter, check the selected configuration, its unit and its measurement mode.
- If you have changed the dashboard’s content, save it.
Cancel or Back discards the unsaved fields. Configurations and gateways already created are kept: their confirmation is immediate and does not depend on Save in the dashboard.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”- A warning states that a configuration already reads the same unit and register: check for duplicates, as well as identical names. If it is the same measurement, click Cancel, then choose the existing entry in the meter.
- Fill in the required fields first: complete the flagged fields, including in Advanced settings.
- Could not save the configuration: keep your parameters and check the catalog before any new creation.
If the state remains uncertain, contact support@can-nx.com with the message and the steps tried.
