Boss’nX on a computer: schema editor, Used datapoints panel
The Used datapoints panel of the Boss’nX schema editor lists the datapoints associated with the elements of a drawing, with their component, DPT and addresses. Search for a piece of data, filter by layer or element type, then locate each element that uses it to examine it in Configuration.
Intended for administrators and installers who edit schemas. To simply view a drawing, without going through the editor, use the Schemas page.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Your role allows View schemas and Edit schemas: the panel belongs to the editor.
- You are working on a computer, in a supervision opened directly or from the hypervision.
Open the Used datapoints panel
Section titled “Open the Used datapoints panel”- From the supervision concerned, open Schemas in the header bar, or Menu → Schemas if this page does not appear in the bar.
- Find the schema in the left panel, hover over its row and open the three vertical dots Actions.
- Choose Edit schema, then wait for the name and the drawing to load.
- At the bottom right of the drawing area, click Used, the button with a database icon and the tooltip Show used datapoints.
The Used datapoints panel shows the entries found in the layers of the schema, within the selected filters.
Read the entries and counters
Section titled “Read the entries and counters”An entry corresponds to a datapoint: it groups the drawing elements associated with that same datapoint.
| Indication | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Component and datapoint | The data used and the component it belongs to |
| DPT | Data type, when it is filled in |
| R | Status feedback address, when it is filled in |
| W | Action address, when it is filled in |
| nodes | Number of drawing elements associated with the datapoint |
| layers | Number of distinct layers that contain these elements |
Fictitious example: 2 nodes, 1 layer means that two elements use this datapoint in the same layer.
The counter on the Used button takes the layer and type filters into account. In the panel, a search shows a result in the form 3 / 14: a fictitious example of three entries found among the fourteen retained before this search. The (filtered) mention next to the counter shows that a layer or type filter is applied. These numbers count grouped datapoints, not all the elements of the drawing.
Search and filter the list
Section titled “Search and filter the list”- In Search… (component, datapoint, address, layer, node), type part of the name you are looking for, an address or the name of a layer. Fictitious example: Hall.
- To empty the field, click its small cross, tooltip Clear. It removes the search text and leaves the filters in place.
- Open Layers: All, tooltip Filter by layer, and check the layers to keep. Active keeps the layer that is active at the moment of the click; All removes this filter.
- Open Types: All, tooltip Filter by node type, and check the element types to keep; All removes this filter.
- Close a filter menu with Close, Esc or a click outside.
The two filters combine: an element must match both the chosen layer and the chosen type. In each menu, you can check several values. After a layer change, check the name shown in the filter and click Active again to target the new layer.
The search retains whole datapoint entries. If an entry matches through one of its elements, its expanded view can also show its other elements included in the filters: read each row before locating.
Locate an element in the drawing
Section titled “Locate an element in the drawing”- Click the chevron to the left of the entry, tooltip Expand. Each expanded row shows the name, layer and type of an element.
- On the row you want, click Locate, tooltip Locate on canvas. The layer concerned is displayed and the selected element can be examined in Configuration.
- If the layer changes without Configuration opening, wait for it to load, then click Locate a second time, on the same row.
- To close the entry again, click its chevron, tooltip Collapse.
Hovering over an entry or a row also helps you find the elements concerned on the displayed layer; for another layer, use Locate. This command selects the element in the drawing, without sending a command to the device.
If Configuration covers a Used datapoints control, first close it with its Close cross at the top right, then continue in the panel.
Close the panel and save your changes
Section titled “Close the panel and save your changes”The Close cross at the top right of the panel collapses it. When you reopen it, the search is cleared and the entries are collapsed, but the layer and type filters remain selected. To start again without restriction, choose All in both menus.
Searching, filtering or locating does not change the schema configuration. If you then change an element, save the schema to keep this change. If the Unsaved changes box appears when you leave the editor, read its choices before answering if you want to keep your changes.
Check the result
Section titled “Check the result”- After Locate, compare the name, layer and type of the selected element with the row of the panel.
- For an Icon button, check the chosen data in Linked data, in Configuration.
- After a saved binding change, reopen Used and read the datapoint entry again.
The R and W addresses and the DPT help you identify the data: they do not indicate the state of communication with the device.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Message | Action |
|---|---|
| No result | Clear the search, then check both filters. |
| No datapoint for these filters | Choose All in Layers and in Types. |
| No used datapoint | Check that the right schema is open and has finished loading. |
- The panel helps you find the datapoints associated with the elements of the drawing. It does not list all the data of the installation or all the rules of the drawing, and it does not detail every datapoint of a component card.
- An element missing from the list is not, on its own, a reason to delete or recreate it. Also examine the messages of the Issues panel.
- If Configuration still does not open after the second click on Locate, note the schema, the layer and the element you are looking for, for support.
- If, after a binding change, Used shows an indication different from Linked data, check the same element in Configuration and note both indications. Do not delete or recreate the element based only on this lookup.
For common cases, see the used datapoints FAQ. If you still cannot find the expected element, contact support@can-nx.com, stating the product, the schema, the layer, the name you are looking for, the searches or filters already tried and, where relevant, the indications noted and the steps already tried. A screenshot without sensitive data can help.
