--- title: "Boss’nX navigation link: open another layer or another schema" description: "Set up a navigation link in a Boss’nX schema: choose the destination layer or schema, the target layer, then save and try the link in view mode." canonical: https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-link-destination/ language: en product: Boss’nX audience: - administrateur - installateur context: "Boss’nX schema editor on a computer: Configuration, Interaction, Destination of a link" --- # Boss’nX navigation link: open another layer or another schema Context: Boss’nX schema editor on a computer: Configuration, Interaction, Destination of a link In the Boss’nX schema editor, a **Navigation link** lets users move from one drawing to another: a click in view mode opens a layer of the same schema or another schema, optionally on a specific layer. Its destination is chosen in **Configuration → Interaction → Destination**, then checked in view mode. Intended for administrators and installers who build the schemas of a supervision. To use an already configured link without changing it, see [viewing schemas](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schemas-consult/). ## Before you start - Your role grants **View schemas** and **Edit schemas**; see [the role capabilities](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-capabilities/). - You are working on a computer, in a supervision opened directly or from the hypervision. - The destination schema and layer already exist and are accessible in your context. ## Open or add the link in the editor 1. In the relevant supervision, open **Schemas** in the header bar, or **Menu → Schemas**. 2. Hover over the row of the schema that contains the link, open the three dots **Actions**, then **Edit schema**. Wait for the name and the drawing to load. 3. Explicitly choose [the layer that contains the link](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-layers/), then select the link in the drawing. **Configuration** opens on the right. 4. To add a new link, search for **Navigation link** in **Search elements…**, in the left panel, then click its tile. The new element appears selected. In **Configuration → Style**, fill in **Label** if you want an explicit text, for example **View reception** (fictitious example). 5. In Configuration, open **Interaction** and locate **Destination**. Then follow the Layer or Schema procedure below. The text of the link is used to recognize it: changing its Label does not choose its destination. To change only the destination of an existing link, leave its presentation settings as they are. ## Open a layer of the same schema 1. Under **Destination**, click **Layer**. 2. Open **Select a layer...** and choose the layer to display, for example **Reception** (fictitious example). 3. Check that this name remains displayed in the field. If the link had no destination, the text **No destination configured** disappears after the choice and the validation update. 4. Save, then try the link in view mode as shown below. This list only offers the layers of the schema being edited. To reach a layer of another schema, choose **Schema**. ## Open another schema and choose its layer 1. Under **Destination**, click **Schema**. 2. In **Search schemas...**, enter part of its name, for example **Lobby** (fictitious example). Wait for the list of results. 3. Click the name of the desired schema in the results. It appears in a box with a small cross on the right. Only this click selects the schema: a name merely typed in the search has no effect. 4. Wait for **Target layer (optional)** to load. 5. If the link must always target a specific layer, choose it. Otherwise, leave **Default layer**: the link will open the default layer of the destination schema, which is not necessarily the first one in the list. 6. Check the schema name and the target layer together, then save and try the link. Choosing another schema resets the target layer to **Default layer**. After each change of schema, choose the specific layer again if your goal requires it. ## Save the schema 1. Click **Save** in the left panel. Read the confirmation and confirm the desired save. 2. Check the layer summary and the result messages. Saving is detailed in [the schema saving guide](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-editor-save/); if it fails, follow [the save troubleshooting](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-editor-help/). ## Check the result 1. To review the saved choice, reopen the same schema for editing, select the same layer and the same link, then examine **Configuration → Interaction → Destination**. 2. To try the link, open **Schemas** in the header bar or in the **Menu**. In the left panel, select the schema that contains the link; expand its chevron if necessary to choose the layer of the link. 3. In the drawing in view mode, click the link. The chosen layer, or the schema and its target layer, must be displayed. The navigation click is used in view mode: in the editor, a click on the link only selects it for configuration. To then edit an element after following a link, explicitly choose the right layer in the list before **Actions → Edit schema**, without relying only on the highlighting in the list to identify the drawing displayed. ## Replace, clear or undo a destination To replace the choice, go back to **Configuration → Interaction → Destination** and select the new layer or the new schema. Check the fields before saving. In the **Schema** procedure, the small cross to the right of the selected name removes this destination immediately, without confirmation. It does more than close the selection: the link stays in the drawing but no longer has a schema to open, and **No destination configured** may reappear. Right after an accidental change or clearing, use **Undo (Ctrl+Z)** in the bottom bar, if this button is available. Check that the previous schema and target layer are back, then save only the desired state. This history is local to the editing session: after leaving the editor, choose the known destination again. The red **Delete element** button, at the bottom of Configuration, is a different action that applies to the whole element. To remove only the destination schema, use the small cross. ## Troubleshooting | Situation | Check and next step | | --- | --- | | Configuration stays closed after a click on an element that is still framed | Click an empty area of the drawing, then select the link again. | | **No destination configured** | Actually select a layer, or click a schema in the results. The Label and the search text do not replace this choice. | | **The navigation link has no valid destination.** | In [Issues](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-validation/), locate the link, then review its Destination. Check that the expected layer is still offered before concluding that something was deleted. | | The schema you are looking for does not appear | Clear or shorten the search, check the relevant supervision and wait for loading. **Select a schema...** may remain displayed without results: this text does not indicate the cause. If the schema is still missing, contact support. | | The list of target layers is not ready | Wait after choosing the schema. If the expected layer is still missing, check the name of the chosen schema, then contact support if necessary. | | The click only selects the link | Try it in view mode after saving; in the editor, the click is for configuration. | | The schema is correct, but the resulting drawing is not the right one | Check **Target layer (optional)**. If a specific layer is expected, choose it explicitly, save, then try again in view mode. | | The destination is still incorrect after saving and reopening | Contact support with the reviewed fields, the expected result and the drawing actually obtained. Do not clear the schema for this issue alone. | **Save anyway** can save the drawing, but it does not choose the missing destination for you: correct **Destination** before relying on the link. Other cases are covered in [the questions about navigation links](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-link-help/). If these checks fail or the choice remains uncertain, contact support@can-nx.com with the product, the schema and the layer that contain the link, its Label, the expected destination, the message displayed and the attempts already made. A screenshot without sensitive data can help.
