--- title: Link an Icon button to a datapoint in a Boss’nX schema description: "Bind a Boss’nX schema Icon button to the right datapoint with Linked data: search by zone, DPT or KNX address, replace or remove the binding, then check it." canonical: https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-binding/ language: en product: Boss’nX audience: - administrateur - installateur context: "Boss’nX schema editor on a computer: Configuration panel, Interaction tab of an Icon button" --- # Link an Icon button to a datapoint in a Boss’nX schema Context: Boss’nX schema editor on a computer: Configuration panel, Interaction tab of an Icon button In the Boss’nX schema editor, the **Linked data** field of an **Icon button** associates this button with a datapoint of the supervision, for example the On/Off command of a light. There you choose the data item, replace it or remove the binding, then check the choice after saving. Intended for administrators and installers allowed to **View schemas** and **Edit schemas**, on a computer, in a supervision opened directly or from the hypervision. ## Before you start - The expected datapoint is already available in the supervision. - You know its component and its use, device command or status feedback, before changing a binding. ## Open the Linked data field 1. Open **Schemas** in the header bar or in the **Menu**. Hover over the schema row, choose the three dots **Actions → Edit schema**, then wait for the name and the drawing to load. 2. Choose the right [layer](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-layers/) and select the Icon button in the drawing. **Configuration** opens on the right. 3. To add a new button, search for **Icon button** in **Search elements…** on the left, then click its tile. Check the position of the new element and its Configuration panel. 4. In Configuration, open **Interaction**. For a button that uses a data item, leave **Decorative element** turned off. Keep the existing **Behavior** setting: to choose or replace the data item, there is no need to switch it to **Toggle (ON/OFF)**, because this setting changes another property of the button. 5. Under **Linked data**, click **Choose a datapoint…**, or the field showing the current binding. ## Find and choose the datapoint 1. In the selection window, use **Search (zone, component, DPT, KNX address…)**. Fictitious example: **Hall** to find a zone or a component. 2. Expand the desired component with its chevron to display its datapoints: a search that finds a component may leave its points collapsed. 3. To search only by datapoint properties, check **Match datapoints only**. Uncheck it to return to a search by zone or component. 4. Read the datapoint name, the component name and, when present, the **R** status feedback and **W** action markers, the DPT and the unit. To command a device, choose a data item intended for writing and identified for this use. The mention **Compatible: DPT 1.xxx (boolean)** indicates the accepted data family; also check the W marker of the chosen result. 5. Click the row of the desired datapoint. The window closes and Linked data shows this datapoint, its markers and its component. Check them before continuing. To tell apart data items with the same name, search for a known address, for example the fictitious address **1/0/81**. When only one datapoint row is visible, **Enter** from the search field chooses it; clicking the row is still possible. The number of points offered matches this compatible selection: it may be lower than the total number of the component’s data items in the palette. Choose the data item for its use, never only to make a warning disappear. To close the selection without a new choice, click outside. **Esc** first clears a non-empty search; a second press closes the selection and returns to the Linked data field. Choosing a datapoint prepares the button’s configuration: no datapoint is created and no command is sent to the device. ## Replace an existing binding Click the field already filled in, find the new data item and select it. The window opens without the previous search and lets you find the branch of the current data item. If both data items have the same name, check above all the component shown after the new choice. The change stays in the draft until it is saved. To return at once to the previous choice, use **Undo (Ctrl+Z)** in the bottom bar; **Redo (Ctrl+Y)** reapplies the change, as long as these operations are available in the local history. After leaving the editor, do not rely on this history any more: select the known data item again. ## Remove the binding without deleting the button The small cross in the **Linked data** field, tooltip **Remove binding**, removes the choice immediately, without confirmation. You can also open the selection and choose the **No binding** row. The Icon button stays in the drawing and its field returns to **Choose a datapoint…**. Without a binding, the button no longer commands any data item and a missing-data warning may reappear. To correct an accidental removal, immediately use **Undo (Ctrl+Z)** if available, or choose the known data item again. Save only the desired state. **Delete element**, the red button at the bottom of Configuration, is a different action: it is not used to remove only the binding. If the element must be purely visual, see [the Decorative element setting](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-validation/). When functional data is linked, this switch may be unavailable: keep a necessary binding rather than removing it to enable the decorative option. ## Save the binding 1. Click **Save** in the left panel and read the confirmation. 2. Confirm, wait for **Configuration saved successfully.**, then check the messages and the layer summary. If the operation does not succeed, see [the save help](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-editor-help/). ## Check the result 1. Reopen the same schema for editing, choose the same layer and the same button, then **Configuration → Interaction → Linked data**. 2. Check the saved data item and component. 3. Then check the command on the device: its actual operation also depends on the data item, permissions and communication with the installation. If a **Placed** marker or an entry in **Used** does not match the binding you have just changed, review the Linked data field of the relevant element. Keep the element: this difference in markers alone justifies neither deleting nor recreating it. Report it to support with the two indications observed. ## Troubleshooting - **No result for this search**: clear the search, uncheck Match datapoints only if you are looking for a component, then expand its row. - **No datapoint compatible with this element type**: check the element type and the expected data item. The list offers only compatible data, not all available data. - **Datapoint not found**: check the context and the identity of the expected data item. This message alone does not indicate that a device has been deleted. - Configuration does not reopen after closing, even when clicking the still-framed element: click once in an empty area of the drawing, then select the element again. If the panel is still missing, contact support. For other questions, see [the bindings FAQ](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-schema-binding-help/). If these checks fail, if the command does not work or if the choice remains uncertain, contact support@can-nx.com stating the schema, the layer, the button, the expected component, the message, any Placed or Used markers observed and the attempts made. Do not send any password or access key.
