--- title: Create or rename a user role in Boss’nX description: Create a Boss’nX role with its label, capabilities, scope, datapoint rules and notifications, or rename an existing role, then check the saved result. canonical: https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-create/ language: en product: Boss’nX audience: - administrateur - installateur context: "Boss’nX: Users then Roles in a supervision, with the Manage roles capability" --- # Create or rename a user role in Boss’nX Context: Boss’nX: Users then Roles in a supervision, with the Manage roles capability In Boss’nX, a role brings together the capabilities, component scope, datapoint rules and alarm notifications applied to the accounts that use it. Create it from **New role**, prepare its rights in the four sections of the editor, then save it; an existing role is renamed from **Edit**. Intended for the administrator or installer authorized to manage roles. Creating a role does not create a user account: to assign the prepared role, follow [create an account](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-users-create/) or [change the role of an existing account](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-users-edit/). ## Before you start - Your role has the **Manage roles** capability. - You have [reviewed the existing roles](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-roles-consult/) to check whether one of them already meets the need. ## Open New role 1. Open the relevant supervision, then **Menu → Users**, **Roles** tab. 2. Click **New role**, at the top of the list. 3. In **Label**, enter an understandable name, for example “Building reception” (fictitious example). An empty label or one made only of spaces is refused with **Label is required**. The form opens on **Capabilities**. Initially, all capabilities are disabled, the **Components & Building** scope covers all components and no datapoint or notification rule is defined. Check these sections before creating the role. ## Prepare the rights in the four sections | Section | Choices to prepare | | --- | --- | | **Capabilities** | Enable the useful actions and check the capabilities associated automatically. See [capabilities and logs scope](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-capabilities/), as well as [the allowed widget types](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-widgets/). | | **Components & Building** | Check the initial scope. To limit it, use **Restrict access**, then define the necessary [standing rules](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-scope-rules/) and [overrides](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-scope-overrides/). | | **Datapoint rules** | If necessary, choose the datapoints to hide or make read-only through [tag rules](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-datapoint-tags/), and prepare the [“Show only” restrictions](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-show-only/). | | **Notifications** | Define the [notification rules](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-role-notifications/) needed for this role. | Moving from one section to another keeps your input. Nothing is saved until you click **Save** in the role’s bottom bar. If a window or a card offers its own confirmation, confirm it first to include its choices in the role draft. ## Create the role 1. Review the label, capabilities, scope, datapoint rules and notifications. 2. Click **Save** in the bottom bar. 3. Wait for saving to finish before editing the form again. 4. Wait for **Role created** and the return to the **Roles** list. ## Check the result 1. Find the new row, then open **Edit** to review the settings kept. Spaces at the beginning and end of the label are removed on saving. 2. Have a person authorized to manage users assign the role to the accounts concerned. 3. Before it is used, open a new session with an account concerned and check the expected access as well as the access that must remain absent. ## Rename an existing role 1. In **Roles**, locate the role and check its associated accounts. 2. Click **Edit** on its row. 3. If **Label** is editable, replace its content with the name you want. 4. Review the other sections if you also changed them, then click **Save**. 5. Wait for **Role updated** and check the new label in the list. Changing only the label keeps the role’s settings. If the field is read-only, read the banner and have the administrator check which role to use, rather than recreating a role to get around the unavailable field. ## Discard or abandon a draft **Discard** restores all sections to their loaded state, without leaving the editor. For a creation, the label becomes empty again and the initial settings are restored. For an existing role, its loaded values are restored. With unsaved changes, **Back to roles** opens **Discard your unsaved changes?**. Declining keeps the draft; confirming leaves the editor and abandons these changes. Closing or reloading the tab may also trigger the browser warning. ## Troubleshooting | Message or symptom | Action | | --- | --- | | **Save** absent | Check that a value was changed and that the role is editable. | | **Label is required** | Enter a name, then click **Save** again. | | **Save** unavailable | Wait for an operation in progress to finish, or read the **Datapoint rules** warning: the **Hide any unlisted component** mode requires at least one restriction. | | Refusal message or interrupted save | Note the message and check in the list whether the role or its new label was saved before repeating the operation. | | Unexpected label or role after saving | Check your rights and the supervision context. | If the result remains uncertain, contact support@can-nx.com specifying the supervision, the role label, the displayed message and the checks performed, without sending any access secret. French labels: **Menu → Utilisateurs → Rôles → Nouveau rôle**, **Libellé**, **Capacités**, **Composants & Bâtiment**, **Règles de datapoints**, **Notifications**, **Enregistrer**, **Rôle créé**, **Modifier**, **Rôle mis à jour**, **Annuler les modifications**, **Retour aux rôles**, **Abandonner les modifications non enregistrées ?**, **Le libellé est requis**.
