--- title: "KNX datapoint in Boss’nX: group addresses, DPT and gateway" description: "Configure a KNX datapoint in Boss’nX: command and feedback group addresses, DPT, the Different ETS DPT warning and a gateway specific to the datapoint." canonical: https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-point-knx/ language: en product: Boss’nX audience: - administrateur - installateur context: "Boss’nX on a computer: component editor, KNX datapoint for command, feedback or both" --- # KNX datapoint in Boss’nX: group addresses, DPT and gateway Context: Boss’nX on a computer: component editor, KNX datapoint for command, feedback or both In the Boss’nX component editor, a KNX datapoint associates a command group address, a status feedback address, or both, with a DPT. It goes through the component’s gateway or through another gateway of the project, chosen for this datapoint only. Intended for administrators and installers with **Manage components**. To add several addresses that are already available in one go, use [the KNX multiple import](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-import-knx/); for a BACnet datapoint, follow [choosing the datapoint’s device and object](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-point-bacnet/). ## Before you start - The datapoint’s group addresses and DPT are confirmed for the installation. - Open **Components** in your bar or through **Menu → Components**, then the **Edit component** pencil, or create a component: see [Create component or Edit component](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-component-edit/). - Click **Add point**, or find the existing datapoint. ## Choose the datapoint’s role 1. In the datapoint’s header, select **KNX**. 2. Fill in a **Label** that describes its use. 3. Check the functions you need: **Cmd** to send a command, **Feedback** to read a status feedback, or both. Their tooltips are **Command** and **Feedback**. 4. Check the fields that have become visible. A read-only datapoint needs its feedback address. A command-only datapoint needs its command address and does not, on its own, provide a feedback measurement. Both functions are offered on a new datapoint: uncheck the command if it is not needed. **Alarm** opens a different configuration path and changes the datapoint’s functions. This checkbox is not needed to read a value; do not check it to work around an address error. To configure an alarm, follow [thresholds, lists and boolean variants](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-point-alarm/), and contact support if you are not sure about its settings. ## Fill in the group addresses and the DPT 1. In **Command**, enter the KNX command group address, if the datapoint needs one. 2. In **Feedback**, enter the group address that provides the state or value to display, if the datapoint needs one. 3. Type a confirmed address, or select a suggestion: the list shows the address, its name and its DPT. The search works on the beginning of the address: **1/1/** (fictitious example) finds this group, and **1/1/1** can also suggest **1/1/10**. Read the full address before clicking. 4. In **DPT**, click **Select DPT**, search for the number or the name with **Search...**, then select the type confirmed by the installer. An address chosen from the suggestions may already have applied its DPT: check it once both addresses are filled in. 5. Leave the last field, then review both addresses, the DPT and the datapoint’s options. Fictitious example for a temperature datapoint configured for this purpose: **Command 1/1/1**, **Feedback 1/1/2**, **DPT 9.001**. These values illustrate the fields; check those of your installation before entering them. The yellow triangle **Different ETS DPT (…)** indicates that the DPT known for an address differs from the datapoint’s DPT. Have the correct match confirmed rather than choosing another DPT to make the warning disappear. The absence of a triangle does not certify the device’s configuration. The chosen DPT can suggest a unit, options or suitable labels. To set how they are presented, follow [the display formats and commands](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-point-display/). ## Choose the datapoint’s gateway The general **Gateway**, at the top of the form, is the choice inherited by KNX datapoints that have no specific choice. 1. First check this general gateway. 2. In a KNX datapoint’s header, open the **Gateway · name** chip on the right. It appears when a general gateway is selected. 3. In **Point gateway**, choose **Inherit (name)** to follow the component, or select another gateway of the project. 4. Check the name displayed: the chip is gray when the datapoint inherits, purple when it uses another gateway. 5. Save the component, then reopen the form to check the choices that were kept. If you later change the general gateway, inheriting datapoints follow this choice; those with a different specific choice keep it. So check each affected chip again. A gateway present in the list is not necessarily reachable: have this checked. This per-datapoint choice is specific to KNX datapoints. BACnet and Modbus datapoints refer to their device or to their Modbus access. Declaring [a BACnet device](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-bacnet-devices/) or [a Modbus gateway](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-modbus-gateway-create/) does not automatically create the component’s datapoints. To record values in history, select the addresses in [Data logging → KNX addresses](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-knx-monitoring/), which also describes its limits for specific gateways and reused addresses. ## Check the result 1. Click **Create** or **Save**. 2. Reopen the component and review the addresses, the DPT and the gateway. 3. View its card with [the guide to reading datapoints](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-component/): check that the status feedback shows a current value, then test the command while watching the equipment. A saved address does not yet tell you whether the hardware responds. ## Troubleshooting | Message or symptom | Action | | --- | --- | | **Feedback address required / Command address required** | Fill in the missing address corresponding to **Feedback / Cmd**, or correct the datapoint’s role if this function is not intended. Do not enter a fictitious address to satisfy the validation. | | No suggestions for an address | The search uses the beginning of the address, not the device name. Check the prefix or type the confirmed address manually. | | DPT, gateway or address mapping unknown | Contact support rather than saving assumed values. | | Uncertain save | Follow [the editor troubleshooting](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-component-edit/). | If the problem persists, contact support@can-nx.com with the component, the datapoint, the message displayed and your goal. French labels: **KNX**, **Label**, **Cmd**, **Re.Etat**, **Commande**, **Retour d'état**, **DPT**, **Choisir un DPT**, **Rechercher...**, **DPT ETS différent (…)**, **Passerelle**, **Passerelle du point**, **Hériter (nom)**, **Créer**, **Enregistrer**; path **Composants**, in the bar or through **Menu**, then the **Modifier le composant** pencil; messages **Adresse de retour requise** and **Adresse de commande requise**.
