--- title: Import an ETS project (.knxproj file) into Boss’nX description: Import the .knxproj file of an ETS project into Boss’nX, check the master gateway and prepare the dictionary and structure before creating components. canonical: https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-knx-project/ language: en product: Boss’nX audience: - administrateur - installateur context: "Boss’nX on a computer: Import step of Menu → KNX commissioning, in the building’s supervision" --- # Import an ETS project (.knxproj file) into Boss’nX Context: Boss’nX on a computer: Import step of Menu → KNX commissioning, in the building’s supervision The **Import** step of Boss’nX commissioning analyzes the **.knxproj** file of your ETS project and retrieves its group addresses. It opens the rest of the process: the dictionary recognizes these addresses, then the **Structure** step creates the supervision’s components. Intended for administrators and installers who prepare the addresses and structure of a building. To add datapoints to an existing component, use [the component’s Import → KNX](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-import-knx/) instead. ## Before you start - Your role has **Manage topology**: viewing access is not enough. - You are working on a computer, in the supervision of the building to configure. From the hypervision, first enter this supervision. - You have the **.knxproj** file matching this installation, for example `Office-example.knxproj` (fictitious name), and its password if it is protected. ## Open the import and check the master gateway 1. Open **Menu → KNX commissioning**, in the **Integration** family. The **KNX commissioning** page opens at the **Import** step. 2. Check **Master Gateway (optional)**. A gateway may already be selected: check its name and identifier before keeping it, without assuming that it suits the project. This choice prepares its association with the components created afterwards. 3. To assign a gateway in each component instead, choose **None — manual assignment per component**. **Tunneling Mode**, under **KNX Connection Mode**, is an indication, not a button to change protocol: Boss’nX communicates with the KNX installation in Tunneling mode, through an IP/KNX gateway. To view the status of the gateways themselves, see [KNX gateways](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-knx-gateways/). ## Analyze the .knxproj file 1. Drop the file in **Drag and drop your .knxproj file**, or use **Choose a file**. Check the displayed name and **File ready to be analyzed**. 2. If the project is protected, check **Password protected project**, then type its **Password** in the interface field. Never send it by e-mail, to support or to an online assistant. 3. Click **Analyze**. The button may show **Processing...** during the operation. Wait for the upload to finish, then for the analysis: the upload progress ends before the analysis does. 4. Read the final messages. **KNX import complete — build the dictionary** invites you to prepare the recognition of the addresses. 5. Go to **Dictionary** with **Next step** or the corresponding step at the top of the page. In **Group addresses**, check that addresses and names from the expected project are present. Continue with [the KNX dictionary configuration](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-knx-dictionary/). ## Go from the imported file to components Importing the file, recognizing the addresses and creating the components are separate steps of **KNX commissioning**: | Step | Purpose | | --- | --- | | **Import** | Analyzes the file and retrieves the group addresses. **View detected structure**, when offered, opens the structure review without creating anything. | | **Dictionary** | Prepares the recognition rules, shows the recognized addresses and produces the classification used by **Structure**. | | **Structure** | Used to [review and create the detected components](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-knx-structure/). | | [**Building**](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-organization/) | Used for building parts, floors and zones. Also accessible without a KNX file, to prepare an organization manually. Also opened on its own through **Menu → Building organisation**. | ## Check the result - **Import complete**, **Analysis complete. Comparison is ready.** and **Project loaded. Ready for selection.** confirm the analysis of the file, not the creation of the supervision’s components, which happens in **Structure**. - To find the components actually saved, see [the component list](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-components-find/). - An imported or recognized address comes from the file: it does not attest communication with the hardware. ## Import a new version of the project 1. Go back to **Import** and select the file you want. 2. Check the resulting inventory, dictionary and structure before creating or changing components. Do not infer from the new import that the existing components have been replaced or updated. 3. Follow [rerunning an import and resolving conflicts](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-knx-reimport/). If the consequences on existing items remain uncertain, contact support before creating or changing components. ## Troubleshooting - **KNX commissioning** missing from the **Menu**: check the open supervision and have the administrator confirm **Manage topology**. - Progress panel closed: **Close** only hides this panel, without cancelling the processing. Do not start several imports in a row because of it. - Failure shown: note the message. **Retry** puts the import back into preparation; check the selected file again and, if necessary, the password field before clicking **Analyze**. For each error message, follow [the checks according to the message](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-knx-project-help/). If **KNX commissioning** is still missing or the problem persists, contact support@can-nx.com, stating the interface and the role used, and the message shown. French labels: **Menu → Mise en service KNX**, **Import**, **Passerelle maître (optionnel)**, **Aucune — attribution manuelle par composant**, **Analyser**, **Dictionnaire**, **Structure**, **Organisation**, **Étape suivante**.
