--- title: "Boss’nX dashboard external link: add, open or delete a link button" description: "Add a blue button to a website on a Boss’nX supervision dashboard: HTTP or HTTPS URL, button text, saving with Finish editing and deleting the link." canonical: https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-dashboard-links/ language: en product: Boss’nX audience: - utilisateur - administrateur - installateur context: "Boss’nX, supervision dashboard: External link widget, edited on a wide screen depending on rights" --- # Boss’nX dashboard external link: add, open or delete a link button Context: Boss’nX, supervision dashboard: External link widget, edited on a wide screen depending on rights The **External link** widget places a blue button on the **Dashboard** of a Boss’nX supervision that opens a website in a separate tab. You can add several, each with its own destination and text. Users can open the displayed links. Creating, editing or deleting them requires the right to edit the dashboard and authorization for the **External link** widget type. ## Open an existing link 1. Open the expected supervision, then **Dashboard**, following [the navigation](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-navigation/). 2. Find the blue button bearing the text chosen for the link, or **Open link** if no custom text was entered. A small arrow coming out of a square accompanies the text. 3. Outside edit mode, click the button: the destination opens in a separate tab or window, depending on the browser. Then return to the Boss’nX tab to continue. If the button opens a settings panel, the dashboard is in edit mode: finish the changes you want before using the link. If **No URL configured. Enable edit mode to configure this widget.** appears, have an authorized person check its address. ## Add and configure a link button 1. On a wide screen, open **Dashboard**, then click the **Edit layout** pencil in the header. 2. In **Visible widgets**, **External link** section, click **Add link**. 3. Scroll the dashboard to the new blue **Open link** button. 4. Click this blue button, or its **orange gear at the top left**, **Configure the link**. The small **External link** panel opens below the button. 5. In **Link URL**, enter the full web address of the authorized destination, including the protocol: it must use HTTP or HTTPS. An incomplete address or another protocol cannot be used by this button. 6. In **Button text**, type an explicit name, for example **Visitor portal** (a fictional example). If this field stays empty, the button displays **Open link**. 7. Close the panel with its cross, whose tooltip remains **Fermer** (Close) in the English interface. The fields stay prepared in the dashboard being edited: closing the panel does not cancel them. 8. Click **Finish editing**, the blue floppy-disk button that replaces the pencil in the header, and wait for the result. If the panel is cut off on the left edge, close it with its cross, then widen the widget by dragging its **small gray corner at the bottom right** to the right. Reopen the gear and check that all fields are visible; see [move and resize](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-dashboard-layout/). The panel has no Save or Preview button: **Finish editing** saves the link. Do not enter an address containing a password, a key or a confidential access token. To edit an existing link, enter edit mode, open its button or its gear, then go through the fields and the saving above again. ## Delete a link or undo the changes 1. Enter edit mode and open the panel of the link concerned. 2. Click **Delete**, the red button with a trash can at the bottom of the panel. The widget disappears immediately from the dashboard being edited, without confirmation. 3. To keep the deletion, click **Finish editing**. To undo it before saving, use **Restore original layout**. The deletion removes the shortcut from the dashboard, without deleting the destination site. Once the deletion is saved, you can recreate a link if needed. Before **Finish editing**, **Restore original layout** in **Visible widgets** brings the links and the other prepared settings back to their state at the start of this editing session. This restoration can discard several changes at once. Merely closing the small panel does not produce this cancellation. ## Check the result After **Finish editing**, reopen the dashboard and read the button text again. Then click it outside edit mode to check that the expected destination opens and is reachable. After a deletion, check that the button no longer appears. ## Troubleshooting - **Add link** or editing is missing: check the supervision and have the account rights and the authorized widget types checked. - The panel reports **URL must start with…**: reread the full address, especially its HTTP or HTTPS protocol. Correct it with the authorized address provided for this destination. - Clicking opens the settings: you are in edit mode. Finish the changes you want, then use the button in the dashboard. - No tab opens outside edit mode: check whether the browser reports that opening was blocked and have the link address checked. Do not create a new widget just to try to solve this symptom. - The destination opens but remains inaccessible: check that it is the right destination and that your access to this service is available. - The text or address reviewed after saving does not match the expected choice: check the context once and reopen the dashboard. For other questions about widgets and how they are saved, see [the questions about the overview, its image and links](https://wiki.can-nx.com/en/guides/boss-overview-help/). ## Contact support If **Add link** remains absent with no explanation, if access to the destination remains uncertain or if the saved result still does not match, write to support@can-nx.com. Give the button text, the symptom and the checks already made, without sending a confidential link.
